The newspaper industry seems to me to be nearly as bad as the book industry in understanding how its business works.

&quot;We&#039;re losing readers as they age, not gaining young readers, ad dollars are dwindling, but we&#039;re still making a profit [most of us a good one], and we&#039;re still seen as authoritative and relevant. How can we improve things?

&quot;Well, lets shave our staff, close bureaus, shrink the paper, and put more advertising everywhere including on the front page. That didn&#039;t work? Better cut more newsroom personnel.&quot;</description>
