The headline and first paragraph is the heart of any news story (unlike many other forms of written material). As you state, for any given story many people likely read only this heart of the story and never click. In fact many people likely never click on any story on aggregator sites like these. Yet the aggregator gets to show their ads.

I believe this is NOT fair use and Gatehouse is right to ask the courts to stop it, even if others think it is better for Gatehouse if they don't. This issue has come up many times before but the parties always settle. Hopefully, we'll get a ruling here.

Then all these aggregators who are essentially stealing the good work of content producers for the aggregators' benefit and, I believe, to the detriment of the content producers, will be on notice.

So it’s unlikely both companies are going to be successful in the same markets. So GateHouse is faced with this proposition of either stopping their competitor, or perhaps trying to find some way to differentiate themselves. And there are a couple of ways, I think, they could have handled this short of filing a lawsuit.

I'm not sure I'd agree with this. Where I live, in Watertown, Gatehouse also owns the local paper. The circulation is about ~4000, in a town with 14k households. Multiple competitors could both grow for a long time before they were duking it out over the last customer.
