You are insane. It is the internet. I'm 53 years old and stopped reading newspapers about 10 years ago and switched exclusively to the internet and television. I own my own company and 90% of my customers are 30 years old and under. As part of my marketing/advertising plan I ask people where they find companies to buy products from. Google, TV, billboards, radio. None of them can remember ever reading a newspaper. You sir are a dinosaur. Please crawl into the tar pit on your own power, I'll get you a broadband connection to make your final moments more bearable.

Just to chime in.."Finally … Somebody gets it."

My two cents:
The other thing is that advertising for large players is fundamentally changing. However, the market of local advertising is only growing.

My longer story:

Finally ... Somebody gets it. I am so tired of reading "the migration of readers and advertisers to the Internet" as the soundbite explanation for newspaper woes (as if "the Internet" itself was an actual competitor).

Car dealers, home builders, Realtors, retailers ... our best advertisers, have been rocked. Gee, you think that has had any impact? And why is the economy the problem for all other industries, but for the newspaper industry, the problem is the mysterious and powerful "Internet." Don't most, if not all, newspaper companies have powerful interactive offerings?

Most of these struggling companies are still profitable, sometimes very profitable. The problem is they are not as profitable as they were when they took on the debt, and now they are struggling to pay down the debt.

Newspapers have other challenges, sure. But if the economy were strong, we'd be in much better (if not all-together great) shape.

I've never seen a perception of our industry ingrained so deeply in the general public.
