Good interview, Zach and having all those links over on the right makes it a rich stop for a busy reader.
So cool that Pro Publica picked her for this. I can't wait to see what it yields.
So...I keep asking this question, maybe Michel can answer it.
What's wrong with asking people to submit a basic conflicts report before they participate? Nothing too invasive, just a routine checkup.
A lot of amateurs won't have even thought of some of the independence issues that arise from their investments, marriage, memberships, contributions...but once they have, they'll be more thoughtful about their own bias and the organization can be more confident in its defense of their work. And if one of your contributors is a sleeper, they'll get found out faster.
I did it online with a small paper and it markedly improved the level of the debate with our customers about bias, etc. Plus, it made staff think it through every year. Not a bad thing.

Doesn't matter what it's called - as long as people understand what it IS. Today www.minnpost.com launched an effort in what they'e calling "community FUNDING," to remove the other implications you've outlined above.
Will it work? I've offered a $10,000 matching grant for the contributions they're asking for in ten and twenty-five dollar increments.
I've never liked the term "representative journalism" even though I've funded it - Len Witt's idea. When I invested in his Center for Sustainable Journalism, it was with the caveat that the term "RepJ" has got to go because it requires too much of an explanation.
