Howard, I think that's a fair point -- it's one thing to compete on a journalistic level and another to compete for a limited supply of advertising. Although I was critical of the GateHouse lawsuit for a number of reasons, I can see that point when it comes to hyper-local sites. And it makes me wonder whether both the NYT's effort and Patch will be able to survive in the same markets -- I have a feeling that they won't.

Mathew, good post, but one additional point, or expansion on your point: As I mentioned in a comment on Jeff's post, cooperation on content is one thing, but when it comes to advertising a barrier exists.

In a small market, there's only so much money to go around. Advertisers have limited budgets and many may not be willing to buy more than one local online news site.

Two, three, four local sites fighting over the same market ... only the one with the deepest pockets, not necessarily the best one, will survive (exception, maybe, lone-entrepreneur, who is willing to eek by for a long time, might out last deep pockets if the quality is there).

I'll refer you to the Lichtman report in the GHM vs. NYT case. He says something like, if a community has only 20 advertisers, then each local site might get only 10 of those advertisers, or fewer.

Such dilution would be significantly detrimental to any site's success.
