If this is put together with versioned print products - hyperlocal histories, weekly summaries-on-paper of onging stories or hypelocal shopper type products this scales.

It gives big advertisers to make one buy and get into hyperlocal spaces both on the web and in print.
If they can figure out the easy way for local business to make the advertising buy, a large previously underserved market is brought into the game.

Tracy, we are huge admires of West Seattle Blog; our New Jersey blogger gave it a shout-out in her initial post: http://maplewood.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/03/02/why-were-here/. My point -- that you can't make money doing hyperlocal if you start out with a reporter/blogger earning a high-five- or low-six-figure New York Times salary, is unassailable, I think. If you are clearing that kind of income from WSB, then I would like to talk to you about coming to work at The Times and building a hyperlocal network.

We're doing this to figure out if we have something to contribute to the hyperlocal ecosystem. With all of The Times's ambitions (and, I don't think it's grandiose to say, responsibilities) we're not going to be able to work in this space if we can't figure out a way to make it economically viable. If readers and authors and communities conclude that we have something to contribute, we'll survive in hyperlocal. If not, we'll have learned a lot. -- Jim
