But… Hang on a minute! In my CNN Norway days (now long since discontinued CNN.no) we offered breaking news on SMS, generated by way of on-site breaking news tags. Almost ten years ago.

That's got to count for something, huh?

Getting email via a phone "was really tricky and would never really work consistently" three or four years ago??

My sidekick phone has been pushing me email for over five years. There was nothing tricky about setting it up.

T.S., it's fair to assume that lawyers have been involved for a while, but what I know doesn't indicate that CNN ever threatened suit against Cox. They've been in communication about it for two years, according to CNN's spokeswoman, and as Cox told me, it was a "rocky road." However, I think CNN could have acquired the account without any payment or a lawsuit because that's how Twitter has been handling these things. So it may be to CNN's credit that they reached a more amicable solution.

Still, your skepticism is warranted since not all details of the arrangement have been disclosed. —Zach
