After having reviewed the general tenor of Spot.Us stories/proposals, I have a simple question:

If I wanted to subsidize left-leaning journalism calculated to support the preconceived notions of its authors (who selectively ignore empirical evidence that undercuts their perspective), why wouldn't I just go out and burn $1 on the local MSM rag?

Granted, there are many fewer copies around nowadays (heh) but still...

The AWOL reporter: Yeah, this is a weird reality of modern journalism and book writing of any kind. I have worked with an around a bunch of publishers, and I think that some writers when they can't deliver freak out and just go up-country and disappear.

I've taken over a few projects because of a vanishing act. And talk to any book publisher who commissions books off the record, and woo woo hee, they will have stories on this topic. Even to the extent that a book is nearly done, most chapters delivered, edited, what have you, and the author is not to be found anywhere again.

The way to avoid this, most of the time, is to check references for freelancers (like yours truly) to make sure that they reliably deliver material. Most of us who deliver essentially all of the time have easily verified track records.
