@Stephanie: I agree that it's not always useful to follow trends and new technologies. On the other hand, tweets of news events like you mentioned are established and adopted by a large crowd already. For some purposes, real time information like it's provided on twitter can be very useful.

I hate to reduce this to money, but what is AP's strategy for profiting from all of these wonderful social media gizmos? Getting more readers is nice, but if no one is getting paid as a result of the increase, it is meaningless.

I presume one of the desired results is to drive more traffic to Yahoo!, and that Yahoo's compensation to AP will increase. Maybe I should twit the question to AP.

AP is in the process of reducing its payroll by 10 percent this year. This will result in significant staff layoffs. While this is being done, AP is assigning significantly more staff resources to reviewing tweets from people who apparently don't realize that reporters can't just stroll up to a Supreme Court nominee during her confirmation hearing and ask, "Hey, what about jury nullification and honest services fraud?" or "How are you going to rule in this case?" (No nominee would ever answer the second question in any case.)

In some ways this experiment is admirable and exciting, but I don't know if it is best applied to the Sotomayor hearings.

I agree with Chris. The Guardian's tweets during the G20 demonstrations in London were much more engaging and informative than any updates on 24-hour TV. The tweets also helped readers feel more involved with the story- and in this case actually help to take action against further human rights abuses by the police. For an overview of what happened, there's this link.

Looks like something worth watching.

Stephanie,

Done well, Twitter is a great way to engage an audience, present context through links and provide small updates that build into a larger story. There's a huge difference between blasting out updates that mirror what's on TV and having an ongoing conversation where your audience already is.

Twittering at news events is such a waste of time. No one ones to read the stuff. Just because something is new and different doesn't mean it's worth doing.

Good stuff, Ian.

The AP's behavior, as it tries to work around the restrictions of its member-clients, brings a skunkworks to mind. Which is not a sign of a healthy system, of course.
