Gina, I can see how a larger company could create a line of specialty products, like a bakery company making artisanal breads. A newspaper might want to think of itself as a collection of niches, whether that's newsprint or iPhone, or targeted topics like a key industry in its area.

There's a video that I think demonstrates what an artisanal newspaper might look like at the Tunicca Pre-Media Blog http://bit.ly/1nyH5.

It's a particularly interesting take because it seems that the new approach lead to significant increases in circulation.

Brian,

Yes. I think hyperlocal blogs run by the couple down the street are artisanal, but I think newspaper Web sites can be artisanal, too, by having a wide variety of heavily niched blogs.

I'd expand it to the print, too. I think print deals with the niche economy by making individual stories relevant to niches. I see is almost the way sports reporting is ... Sports stories are written for people highly interested in that topic -- not for the mass audience. Someone like me might not understand the story that well but the highly interested readers do.

It's those highly interesed readers we really want.

It brings to mind a small-scale personal operation like I.F. Stone's Weekly, or the early 'zines that were run off on a copying machine. Now, of course, those are blogs. A hyperlocal news blog run by the young couple down the street is what I'd think of as artisanal news.
