I just followed the link to an interesting-to-me story about the Newport News. It would good to know what the results of their approach is.

My hypothesis is that it's working.

Given Rupert's success in the newspaper biz, I think it's plausible to believe that he will change his story when he changes his mind or for other reasons that are hard to fathom.

Just wanted to throw this in the mix. Maybe Rupert knows that getting real money from web advertising only happens at Google scales. He's just completed the most sophisticated newspaper printing facility in the world.

Consider that the business about "charging for content" is actually a way to increase the perceived value of the news-on-paper. It's pretty well established in behavioral economics and common marketplace practice that saying something is worth $X creates the perception that something else is worth $Y.

After the financial success of many of Murdoch's properties, I would assume he has a pretty clear spreadsheet that tells him the monetizable value of the "news." It's not pretty, but in fact, it's never been all that much.
