"It can detect phrases like “the Los Angeles Times reported” in wire stories and promote the original L.A. Times piece among the many other versions of the story."

So if one were to write a post about how LA Times reported on something, that LA Times article would be bumped up in priority rather than the article the person is posting with the link to the LA Times article?

Is it standard practice for News Websites to have 20 different back links to their own webpage from a 1998 article? Then to give this article an off the wall descriptions to current events to make the article appear new? In my opinion, this is a black hat technique and should not be acceptable. Why would Google allow this twelve-year-old article rank high in organic search engine using this technique? This is a made up Example of what I am trying to explain, “Nancy Regan is the mafia in Iraq” then description of the article “Killer whale kills trainer”. I would think Google would find this deceiving and penalize this news source.

This information is going to make a pretty big difference in how SEO services help their clients as well as how newspapers set up their SEO and social media marketing as well. The point made about citations is particularly important I think.

I listened to Matt Cutts and others discuss this on TWiT Live and the information they give about optimizing for Google news is extremely important. However, I can't help but wonder how long it will take for people to abuse this information until they need to change their policies again.

Excellent piece. Bookmarked!
