We talked about the "five Ws" a lot in journalism, but I always argued the most influential was the missing sixth: Which?

By determining which subjects get investigated, patrons will skew the journalism that results. With no aspersion at all cast at individual practitioners, that won't be a good thing.

I agree with Phil. Just finished an analysis of Obama's speech yesterday and I was struck by both differences on coverage, and how shallow mst of the analysis were.

As to nonprofits hiring journalists, Greenpeace Brazil has just hired two of the best Brazilian reporters experienced on the coverage of environmental and scientific issues. Likely to be a trend. It has risks and advantages to it.

To be honest, there are also news organizations that are "mission-driven, policy-oriented" outfits. Just look at the way different outlets covered Obama's healthcare speech last night.

All praise, or all bashing. Neither works, but I saw both from what is considered the mainstream media.
