		<description>In an early plan for Texas Tribune that John Thornton shared with me, he made the interesting observation that when newspapers were essentially monopolies (say from 1900 to 1960 or so), newsrooms were to some extent charitable endeavors on the part of publishers. They spent more on them than they really had to, they took pride in competing in terms of quality and winning prestigious prizes and recognition. So now that it&#039;s possible to have a news enterprise consisting of not much more than a newsroom, a new generation of publisher-philanthropists is jumping into the game.

The barriers to entry in launching an online news operation are low, compared to the old cost of entering a newspaper market, so we will have both those who &quot;get it&quot; and those who buy themselves a mouthpiece without regard for journalistic integrity.</description>
