Interesting article, though I think it is critical to consider host countries as a player in these new relationships. Access relies on host governments, both for journalists and humanitarians. With trends of shrinking humanitarian space in many countries, leaving host governments out of these discussions will result in purely theoretical conclusions. The role of national media must also be considered, as they also contribute to the complexities of these emerging relationships between humanitairans and news. Thanks again for the good overview.

Thank you for this article -- it's a great summary of emerging relationships between NGOs and news.

At a talk on Tuesday at AP Headquarters, John Maxwell Hamilton discussed other new models for international news.

I wrote about it here: http://blogs.journalism.cuny.edu/interactive2010/2009/11/13/the-future-of-foreign-news/.

"It doesn’t serve either party to look like it is trying to curry influence, and no reputable NGO would want to try."

Really?

Define "curry influence"?

Surely any NGO that has someone with "communication" or "advocacy" in their job title is absolutely in the currying business?

And rightly so.
