Maybe I'm being peevish here but The Nation isn't a non-profit. It's a for-profit company.

The Nation Institute is non-profit, but they're quite separate organizations both legally and practically.

"it points to a tough road ahead for news organizations trying to replicate the newspaper model of objectivity in the online world. The new national news organizations most likely to prosper are those that already have a built-in constituency — or a primary purpose other than producing journalism."

What Steve is saying in the comment above, and what Jay Rosen is famous for saying (http://lauraflanders.firedoglake.com/2009/12/05/week-in-review-what-does-new-journalism-look-like/) is that objectivity and journalism are two different things. You are equating them here.

Jim - Great post. Thanks for pointing to MoJo's thinking about how to square this nonprofit business model circle. One clarification, if I can: for Mother Jones, right from the beginning, it's never been about having a "primary purpose other than producing journalism." Always been a "both/and": the reporting really does need to stand on its own as solid journalism, while our choice of stories is informed by a set of values rooted in our origins. That's always been MoJo's stance and a big reason why people read it. There's a long-running thread in American journalism that connects us to other outlets that've done the same.
