"News literacy" is critical thinking applied to a knowledge of the media system. You do need that background knowledge.

Jonathan, the egregious use of "hermeneutic" betrays the origins of this piece as an academic book chapter that only later became a lengthy blog post. The question of who's on the ground, how they make their voice heard and whether we choose to trust it is going to be one of the most critical in international media over the next few years. Yes, I think groups like GV will help, but we're faced with tough questions as well when we're asked to act as an authenticator.

Riven, what I mean by new media literacy is similar to critical thinking, though I hope it's a subset of critical thinking skills. Basically, my case - and it's not really my case, it's a case being made by thinkers like Dan Gillmor - is that readers need to understand that every author has an agenda, to look for multiple points of views to balance those agendas, and to question virtually all information they encounter. The main point of this essay is that - unfortunately - that's extremely difficult to do at present with international news.

Excellent article. We are flooded with information today - what seems to be lacking is training in critical thinking. BTW - how is "news literacy" different from "critical thinking" ?

It's hard to prove a negative, right?

I think having on-the-ground people in a case like this crucial, and that is not going to be the New York Times, it's going to be a blogger from the next town over who'd be willing to go and talk to some folks. So I think groups like Global Voices are going to be really, really important in knocking down this sort of narrative-first, facts-maybe reporting. Bottom line: beware circular referencing and if it's not local, it might be junk.

Also, cheers to using "hermeneutic" in a story.
