I think the interesting thing is that in the "old days" it used to be that consumers of news had a set of trusted sources to go for in order to read or view their news. Now, we seem to be seeing a host of traditional news orgs that are talking about turning to their trusted sources online for news. And now we seem to be discussing what makes those sources relevant, trusted, or valid.

It's true that citizen media drives the public agenda. Google took the tack that it did because it knew it would get some reaction from the Chinese media consumers that use its product, thereby making a wily triangle out of what traditionally would have been a business and a government / trade reps discussion.

Chris, good analysis of this issue, and thanks for noticing my contribution to the discussion. My only disagreement is with this sentence in your third bullet: "And it (original reporting by non-traditional media) also gets overlooked by news organizations themselves." The PEJ story documented a story that broke first in a blog and then got wider notice when the traditional media picked it up. And I documented multiple references in traditional media of a blog the PEJ study excluded from its quantitative analysis.

Reading this on phone on the train, but first impression is that your bullet points at the end nail the essentials.

Also of note, as Paul Somon said, "Still, aam hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest."

I find this of interest because it speaks to a suspicion I hold: that citizen media DOES have some pull in determining public agenda.

Agenda Setting research has largely written off this possibility, due to results which demonstrate what McCombs calls "intermedia agenda setting". Furthermore, research by Reese, Meraz and others has shown that blogs largely take their cues from traditional media venues - namely, the Times and the Post (as noted above).

However, in her conclusion, Meraz has seen evidence of power-sharing between citizen blogs and traditional media, which she says reduces the impact of traditional media's "elite hold" on the agenda.

Furthermore, examination of internet versus traditional media use by Coleman and McCombs has shown reduced correlations, which, while still significant, suggest that whatever's out there on the net is grabbing interest outside of what's being offered in the paper or on TV.

All this speaks in support of the idea of "leap-frogging" you mention above.

Definitely an area which deserves further research.
