How about just giving the user a more complete experience on either site? I'm only going to visit a few sites in a day; I'd like those to give me as big a window as possible onto the world.

I find it interesting that neither company wishes to clarify or verify what they are hoping to accomplish with this tactic. SEO may be the motive but my suspicions also lead in the direction of "monetizing" their sites with increased traffic. But this may backfire in the long run. I personally will stick with the "traditional" SEO standards that have been set forth and keep my content original.
