I'm a journalism student at ASU, so I have the opportunity to hear Mr. Downie speak frequently.

While I have respect for his accomplishments, and agree that not-for-profit models will likely play a part in the future ecosystem of news, I'm disturbed by the message that Mr. Downie and other "respected industry leaders" are increasingly advocating -- that since there's no viable market solution NOW for journalism, there won't be in the future.

His worldview is shaped by broken business models and obsolete technologies, and even though it might sound cliche, he lacks the intuitive understanding of technology that younger generations have.

The journalism industry is transforming. That doesn't mean failing. It still provides a product/service that consumers demand.

The problem with not-for-profit models is they frequently support the status-quo, as there's no incentive to find creative measures to self-finance.

Innovation won't come from the wise advice of a long-time expert. It will come from the grassroots, probably from a different industry, and it will be fueled by the profit-motive.

The situation may be even worse in the UK. With both the creative funding industry slashing staff and funds this recession, and a media that just will not properly invest in diversity and effective training.

Our company is an independent training consultancy and an alternative solution away from university education. We have looked at profit and not-for-profit. Both in this current recession are fraught.

There will be a more diverse media ecosystem. There already is one.

It includes both non-profit and for-profit models and both sectors are vitally important if we want to build better communities.

Collaboration, integrity, transparency and great journalism are in high demand and now is the time to experiment! That's what we at The Sacramento Press are doing.
