As with most surveys, it is best to know where, how it was taken. Fact is, most folks don't have community newspapers. They live in regions long over taken, and taken advantage of by daily newspapers.

Thems that do live in communities with a true community newspaper, want it -- local news, etc. (even the kids in high school and college).

The problem is all news gets lumped into the daily press category. Weekly, community newspapers continue to grow.

Hi Jason -- Good point. I went back and took a look at another section of the study on how satisfied consumers are with the current coverage of different topics. When you take into account this extra information, I think my original point about local news becomes more clear. Even taking margin of error into account, more consumers think there is enough local coverage of their community (57% say there is) versus science news (50% say there is enough coverage) or religion news (51% of respondents said there's enough).

Here's a link to that section:

Very nice overview. My one quibble is with your fifth point: If you look at the methodology and the margin for error, the numbers for what people want covered more are all essentially the same.

I'm terrible at math, though, so please correct me if I'm wrong.
