Good points, and good questions. As far as I'm concerned, the proof's in the pudding: the site will prove its value--or its lack thereof--once it launches.

In the meantime, though, I think it's useful to distinguish between idea and execution here: though the what-it-looks-like-in-practice aspect of the project is still an x-factor, the ideas underscoring it are not. And I'm intrigued by the site's main premise: the disaggregation of the journalistic process, the separation of the core undertakings of journalism (reporting, writing, context-providing) from the subsidiary tasks of product dissemination, revenue generation, etc. The project is essentially questioning the journalist-as-entrepreneur model. It's an idea that's certainly been explored already--True/Slant, etc.--but one that, for my money, deserves even more follow-up and experimentation.

We're racking our brains to see how this can benefit travel/sportswriters like ourselves. This seems to be aimed purely at News sources but are we wrong? Surely a good 'new' newspaper model should incorporate features like Travel and a Sports service, too?

As a journalist I need help with sub- editing and all the other production tasks. I don't think newslabs has much idea about how newsrooms operate. The services they plan to offer are fairly basic one that are readily available or easy to do yourself. Maybe I'm missing something...

The logo, writing and general sloppiness behind this site makes me think this start-up is going nowhere, fast. Seriously, people: if you have heavy hitters backing you up financially, how about hiring some writers (wonder where you could find those?) and a couple of designers to make things look professional?
