Even if Google could help double or triple revenues from online - that wouldn't be near enough to support most newsrooms let alone restore them to their former strength.

Google doesn't understand the newspaper business and it's puzzling why Mr Schmidt is constantly asked to address the newspaper industry.

"And new forms of making money will develop. And they’re underway now…" Every time I hear this, I get a bit of a chill up my spine...because I know that there are many people (who control the availability of jobs for many of my journalist friends) who believe in this empty hope. Techies are fond of these kinds of expressions. But the truth is THERE ARE NO NEW WAYS TO MAKE MONEY!!! Google and Facebook have the same business model as a newspaper. They provides people with information for free, and advertisers with access to consumers for a fee. Day-dreaming about new business models will not save newspapers. Getting better at business, in general, and using the existing types of models, might save them. (Interestingly, you may note that Schmidt also said that journalism would be incredibly "well-organized" and "boring" if computer people did it. Additionally, if computer people did it, do you think it would be free? Other than the occasional free spirit who writes open-source software, I don't know of too many programmers who would give away their work for free.)

Did anyone else get a chuckle out of this:

"Usually, at a speech like this, there’d be a vibrant back-channel conversation, via Twitter, that would allow a more nuanced assessment. Last night’s speech didn’t have that back-talk; relatively few people were tweeting it, though many were taking notes on reporters’ pads.)
