Addressing the silo is one (difficult and important) piece of the puzzle, beyond this, though, is the work of understanding how linguistically bound narratives diverge. Simple aggregation added to these emergent web translation communities–yeeyan, global voices, meedan, chinadialogue– offer us this promise.

– @shioyama has pointed me to a great paper of his about the Global Voices translation community, which takes up some of the issues around volunteer translation of journalism. His work also has a good bibliography to academic literature around news translation generally.

– World Wide Lexicon shows machine translations of articles until a user creates a human translation. It works for individual words and phrases too (so good for interface localization) and maintains an open-source database of all contributed translations. They have WordPress and Drupal plugins if you want to have your blog translated in this way.
