Frequent gossipers showed to be more powerful and have dominant, masculine and aggressive behavior and less submissive or soft-spoken qualities. gossip

A typical way to install cladding is to firstly
fix batons to the surface of the exterior walls of your home. The batons create
a gap between the cladding and the wall which will aid ventilation and
insulation. External Cladding

"Are you better served by encountering the phrase ““Goldman Sachs, the embattled American investment bank,” or switching to another page of background on Goldman and then (presumably) coming back to pick up the narrative?"

It depends whether I already know about Goldman or not. If I've been following the story and know all the players already -- or just don't care -- I'd rather skip the snippets of background. Perhaps this was a poor example; consider those run-on sentences we sometimes get when trying to explain why an obscure source is qualified ("Jane Doe, who worked for the department of giraffe management for seventeen years and wrote two books on African wildlife before becoming a giraffe herself," etc.)

Whether the link makes the narrative smoother or not depends, I guess, on how much verbiage the reader is saved versus how much clicking away pains them.

I certainly agree with most of your pro-link arguments Jonathan, but I disagree with your contention about link value in narratives.

Just ask yourself: In reading a long story about financial behavior, are you better served by encountering the phrase "“Goldman Sachs, the embattled American investment bank," or switching to another page of background on Goldman and then (presumably) coming back to pick up the narrative?

Doesn't seem like a close call to me.

Links do many things better than print. Smoothing narratives isn't one of them.
