This was a really interesting analysis, one of the best I've read recently. I found what you said about the possibility for creating intelligent debate inside The Times 'community'(should that be gated community? I shall henceforth follow your suggestion and stop calling it a wall at any rate) very encouraging. Sarah Ebner's School Gate blog is managing to do that. My blog has been less successful so far in that area, but some of the news articles I am doing seem to generate good debate. As a result I find I am concentrating at the moment more on news and less on the blog. But after the summer I will refocus on the blog, especially with the Pope's visit, and see what happens then.
