Ushahidi is not only a great crowd sourcing tool, but it's also a great source or resource or reporter management and location tool. Where are you now? Who do we have closest to the breaking news event?

Foursquare and Twitter are being used for these purposes by journalism, advertising and public relations students at the College of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, as about 50 of them cover thousands of athletes in 14 venues at the Special Olympics.
Citizen journalists can provide a variety of services for print, broadcast and online news outlets. What they need is training and motivation. The passion is there, but help is needed. That's why we formed the National Association of Citizen Journalists and wrote "Handbook for Citizen Journalists." Thanks for your contribution to the movement.

Crowdsourcing and participative news is the future, as people like Patrick Meier and Matthew Eltringham of the BBC have sagely noted.

The importance of UGC to media houses is undeniable, and that's where companies like Ushahidi and Citizenside come in.

Citizenside's approach is more towards community building around the crowdsourcing, with the aim of driving traffic and increasing engagement.
In fact, it's worked so well for us that we're working with media houses to provide them that same functionality. Le Parisien for instance, has incorporated our citizen journalism technology into their iPhone app. Metro has launched MetroReporter.fr and is the first publication regularly paying readers for their contributions.

Three cheers for all champions of participative news!

Social media and journalism working together.

"What would be really neat is if a company like CNN would use a Ushahidi smartphone app, like maybe the “Ushahidi citizen journalist smartphone app.” And what you do — let’s say you have it on your iPhone — when you download and open your smartphone app, you basically get prompted a question — “Do you allow CNN to know where you are at any given time?” — and you go, “Yes.”
