ABC, the AP, Breaking News, The Guardian, and The New York Times have all updated apps (or introduced new ones) to take advantage of new features on iOS 8.
The app, released with the operating system today, has more functionality in notifications and lets users continue reading articles across Apple devices.
That new ruling gives them potential coverage under shield laws, finding that the definition of journalism does not “impose quality requirements and does not require the dissemination of news to be in a particular format.”
Maybe it’s just a new iteration on the advertorials newspapers and magazines have run for decades. Maybe it’s a scurrilous devaluation of journalism. Either way, it’s here, and at the highest levels of the business. Joshua Benton
