The Las Vegas Sun is a Pulitzer-prize winning newspaper and one of two daily newspapers in Las Vegas. The paper has been owned and operated by the Greenspun family since its founding in 1950.
Since 2005 the Sun has been published under a Joint Operating Agreement with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, with the Sun running as an insert in the Review-Journal. Because of this arrangement the Sun has invested heavily in its website and in multimedia, backed by Greenspun Interactive, the online media division of the Greenspun Media Group.
In 2008 Greenspun hired Rob Curley, who had headed new media efforts at the Naples Daily News and Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive, to be editor for Greenspun Interactive and lasvegassun.com. After Curley’s arrival the Sun put an emphasis on video, and in 2009 the company launched 702.tv, a twice weekly show for TV and the web that focused on news and culture. Four months after launch Greenspun cancelled the show, citing the bad economy.
In spite of staff reductions the Sun continued to innovate with its website in 2010, including a new online commenting policy requiring readers to verify their identity and the launch of Home News, a local news product that tailors stories for readers based on their zip code.
Publish2 is a content-sharing company meant to perform a role similar to traditional syndication networks. Publish2’s first iteration was aimed at helping journalists share content online more easily by aggregating links and posts and creating widgets for news websites.
