Sports Illustrated is the nation’s largest sports magazine, published weekly by Time Warner. Its weekly print circulation in 2010 was around 3.1 million and its web traffic ranks among the highest of the web’s sports sites.

Sports Illustrated has been one of sports journalism’s leading institutions since the 1960s, though it has been criticized in recent years for moving away from long-form journalism and toward lighter features and pop culture coverage.

In 2008, the magazine debuted SI Vault, a free online archive dating back to its founding in 1954.

Sports Illustrated had a longtime partnership with fellow Time Warner property CNN from 1996 through 2013, including the formation of the cable network CNN/SI, which ran from 1996 to 2002.

Sports Illustrated began selling ads on its front page in 2014, along with its fellow Time Inc. title Time magazine. In 2014, an internal document indicated that Time Inc. was evaluating SI’s online writers for their production of content benefiting advertiser relationships.

Sports Illustrated has also published an iPhone version and  several tablet versions of its magazine for both Apple and Android-based systems, as well the Nook reader. It released its iPad app in June of 2010, with a per-issue subscription price of $4.99, though in May 2011 it was made free to print subscribers. In March 2011, a study found that Sports Illustrated’s iPad ads outperformed its ads in print.

SI.com, the magazine’s website, streamed its first live sporting event in September 2011. It launched a daily live web talk show in June 2013.

The magazine cut about 40 newsroom staff members in 2008 and 16 more in 2012.
