“Google recalled its feature back in a day, but no one can recall the doubt that now attaches to every image out of a war zone. The counterfeit satellite frames from this war are still being screenshotted into new claims, and the authentic record now carries an asterisk it does not deserve. Somewhere in that gap, the photojournalists proving their own pictures, the families weighing which warnings to believe, and the fact-checkers running behind the lie keep doing the slow work of restoring what a product launch made deniable in an instant.” —HT
New York Times CEO Meredith Kopit Levien “publicly confirmed that The Times and its subsidiary, The Athletic, were no longer pursuing a ‘major sort of integrated partnership’ with the prediction market Kalshi. Her confirmation came weeks after Status highlighted early backlash in the newsroom following Front Office Sports’ report of the talks.” —HT
“In public over the last several weeks, Bessent has railed against the Financial Times for reporting that he had discussed tightening Treasury’s oversight of the Federal Reserve by adopting elements of the Bank of England’s model, describing the story as ‘tabloid trash for market participants’ and calling the reporters ‘pathetic’ and ‘mendacious.’” —HT
“It’s unclear where the company goes from here, but some signs point to more social media influencers. [The Charlotte Observer] created the role of a ‘food insider’ this year, who shares experiences eating country fried steaks and ceviche in Instagram videos. And McClatchy’s website posted new positions last month for ‘College Sports Personality/Influencer’ and ‘Saltwater South Personality/Influencer,’ described as a ‘digital lifestyle brand celebrating the unique spirit of the Gulf Coast, Carolinas and Florida.’ The pay for each is listed at up to $106,000 a year, which is more than the salaries of most McClatchy reporters.” —HT
“Generations of Black publications have delivered alternative coverage — and The Knowing has entered the ring among other young publications such as Capital B and MLK50 — to stake a claim on what the magazine describes as ‘an audience orphaned by a publication of record producing fact-based, trusted journalism and criticism.’” —HT
“But in a world of dwindling attention spans, four hours in a theater is a lot to ask (even if it does have a 10-minute intermission). It could miss the people who need to see it the most.” —HT
“Once a publisher joins the ‘AI contribution pilot,’ they receive an extra AI earnings widget via their Search Console dashboard. This displays a monthly earnings number (with some history), though no other detailed information on how payouts are calculated currently. Payments are based more on value than raw usage, meaning Google only pays when it judges that a piece of content has meaningfully contributed to an AI-generated response.” —HT
“We are living in a desert where people feel like this sort of stuff doesn’t work anymore,” Torre said. “But it’s the same shit it’s always been. It’s documents, it’s human sources, it’s fact checking, it’s months of investigation. It is trying to make sure that you get it right using every available creative thought process that you can come up with, and that’s always been what this job is. And so for me, I think it’s a validation of what all of us were taught. Like, it still works.” —HT
