The Des Moines Register, the Associated Press, and WNYC are among organizations receiving a total of $3.2 million for projects designed to increase voter turnout and develop more tools to analyze campaign finance disclosures.
The number of independent local news sites generating significant revenue leaves something to be desired. At the top of the list: a site covering the Florida Panhandle beach lifestyle.
“From the beginning, we wanted to develop revenue streams beyond banner ads,” says Jay Allred, publisher of Richland Source.
Like many other publishers, The Wall Street Journal has shifted resources away from live, appointment-viewing video toward on-demand viewing.
