Valérie Bélair-Gagnon is a Ph.D. candidate at City University London. Her research focuses on journalism, emerging media and social change. Originally from Montreal, Canada, she completed an M.Sc. at the Université de Montréal and a B.A. at McGill University. Colin Agur is a Ph.D. candidate in communications at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. His research focuses on cultural and sociological aspects of mobile phone use in developing countries. His dissertation is based on ethnographic field work in India. For the 2011-12 academic year, he is a visiting fellow at Yale Law School’s Information Society Project.
In the United States, social media is seen as part of a survival strategy. In India, the traditional model is doing quite well on its own.
