WhereBy.Us is one of the most interesting digital startups working in the local news space. After starting in Florida, it’s launching The Evergrey in Seattle, and it has its eye on additional markets.
Like Billy Penn in Philadelphia, the Pittsburgh site will focus on attracting a younger audience through events and aggregation in addition to original reporting.
“We want to improve our reporting, and this is one way we can get feedback from and learn from some of the most storied brands in journalism.”
“For global media, reaching scale is the hardest thing. In local, making money is the hardest thing. Delaying the hard thing makes for a crappier company.”
The North Carolina startup says it’s profitable and is looking to expand its reach — but it’s not seeking outside funding.
“For someone just starting out with a local news project, the most important takeaway from our report — and our work in general — is that we are stronger working together than we are working alone.”
We talked to its new crop of board members: “My experience in the area of philanthropy is that if you are addressing important issues, have good ideas, and can show results, people and organizations are willing to support you.”
