Just as blogging allowed a new cadre of journalists to work outside established news organizations in the early 2000s, the email newsletter boom has done the same in local communities. “This is more than 40 hours a week for far less than minimum wage. To be frank, it’s exhausting. I only do it because it’s so important.”
Inside.com recently raised $2.6 million from SeedInvest, Jason Calacanis, and “hundreds of our readers” to keep the growth going (but not relying on reader revenue).
“Who’s your audience? How will you serve that audience? Why do we care about that audience? No, really, what’s the payoff?”

Just for starters, the Globe will have an expanding hub of coverage online, more live events, and a high-priced premium subscription newsletter for industry professionals.
From a single morning email, it’s grown into a multi-product brand that its fans can interact with throughout the day. “We’ve always said email was a marketing tool for us. The product expansions are always about making it easier to live a smarter life.”
