For the first time ever, more online news sites produced Pulitzer finalists than newspapers did.
“Is it ready for primetime, ready to be released to the masses? Absolutely not…But can it be done? Can you design an AI system that attends a city meeting and generates a story? Yeah, I did it.”
Documenters has already trained more than 1,700 people who’ve covered more than 2,300 public meetings.

Chicago’s City Bureau is betting on local residents doing this sort of low-key not-quite-journalism at meetings, and now it’s expanding the model to Detroit.
“We’re trying to empower folks to make their own decisions, and that requires that we get them the right information.”
