As 2021 came to a close, NewsMatch was just getting started.

The Institute for Nonprofit News (INN) announced it raised $12 million — including $6 million in matching funds — for the fundraising program that takes place in the last two months of the year.

More than 300 newsrooms participated in NewsMatch 2021, including 77 newsrooms that have launched since 2019. About 24% of the participating newsrooms say serving communities of color is their primary mission and 69% have a local or statewide focus.

NewsMatch 2021, as in previous years, encouraged individual donors to give to nonprofit newsrooms by securing promises to match the funds raised from large funders. (You can see a few examples of how news organizations have used the program in the past here.)

While individual donations are increasingly important to nonprofit newsrooms, many rely on foundation funding for the bulk of their revenue — and those gifts disproportionately go to outlets with a national (rather than local or statewide) focus.

We can expect to hear more information about NewsMatch — including the total amount raised by newsrooms in 2021 — later this year. INN did name some of the organizations that have backed the record-setting matching program in 2021:

NewsMatch 2021 funders include the Democracy FundThe John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Meta Journalism Project, the Bernard and Anne Spitzer Charitable Trust, Google News InitiativeInasmuch Foundation, the Independence Public Media Foundation, the Jonathan Logan Family Foundation, Kaphan Foundation, Loud Hound, Natasha and Dirk Ziff, the Present Progressive Fund at Schwab Charitable, Sarena Snider, Solidarity Giving, the William and Flora Hewlett FoundationWalton Family Foundation, and the Wyncote Foundation. Dozens of local and issue-based funders were also secured by newsrooms.
